In 2022, following the end of partisan gerrymandering, Michigan voters elected the first Democratic trifecta—meaning Democrats control the state House, Senate, and governor’s office—in 40 years. These new majorities wasted no time and got to work on creating the better future our communities deserve.
Here are just some of the highlights:
Took decisive action to prevent gun violence. The people of Michigan recognize that gun violence is an epidemic, and our lawmakers have an obligation to step up and pass evidence-based policies to keep us safe. Michigan Democrats acted swiftly to pass three critical gun violence prevention bills—Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), safe storage requirements, and universal background checks—and they’re just getting started.
Restored workers’ long-lost rights. Under Republican governors Rick Snyder and John Engler, Michigan unions and workers faced an onslaught of anti-worker bills, including the so-called “Right to Work” law, the elimination of prevailing wage, and strict limits on educators’ and other public workers’ bargaining rights. But with Democrats in office, those rights have been restored, paving the way for a more pro-worker Michigan.
Passed a strong education budget to support public schools. With their new legislative majorities, Michigan Dems have continued the work Governor Whitmer started to uplift public schools across the state. The historic budget they passed in 2023 was an excellent start, including funding for a wide array of important priorities like universal free breakfast and lunch for K-12 students, and access to pre-K for every 4-year-old in Michigan.
Strengthened protections for abortion rights. In 2022, Michigan voters made it clear with the passage of Proposal 3 that we support reproductive freedom for all, and Democratic lawmakers are working to make that a reality. They have already struck Michigan’s archaic pre-Roe abortion ban from the books, and they worked to pass the Reproductive Health Act, which eliminated several lingering restrictions on abortion care that only served to cut patients off from the care they needed.
Stood up for seniors. Thousands of Michigan seniors benefit from pensions they worked decades to earn—but thanks to Republican lawmakers, these pensions were unfairly diminished by an unpopular retirement tax. With Michigan Democrats in control, the retirement tax has been removed from the books and seniors’ hard-earned pensions have been restored.
Passed and implemented pro-voter policies. Michigan voters stepped up in 2018 and 2022 to pass pro-voter proposals designed to expand access to the ballot box, and Michigan Dems are delivering on that vision. In addition to doing their part to effectively implement Proposal 2, they’re thinking even bigger, with bills to safeguard voting rights for years to come and protect marginalized voters’ ability to cast their ballots.
